ANNOUNCEMENTS

Celebrate the wildlife of Withdean Woods - before cheering on the Albion!

Albion supporters are being invited to get back to nature at a family fun morning, prior to the team's last game at Withdean Stadium.

The event is being held at Brighton & Hove City Council's Withdean Woods Local Nature Reserve which flanks two sides of the stadium, from 10.30am to 1pm on Saturday April 30. Entrance to the woods is from Withdean Road.

Blue Flags furled by bad weather

Heavy rain last summer means Brighton and Hove beaches will not be flying their Blue Flags this season.

Rainfall tends to wash debris from land to sea – and this reduced water quality during the test period last year. However council officials say water quality is still safe – classified as ‘good’ rather than the ‘excellent’ needed for a flag.

A council spokesman said: “Many resorts tend to suffer this from time to time and others will be affected this year.”

Nearly 1000 join tax-free bikes scheme

Numbers of Brighton & Hove council staff buying discounted bikes under a government scheme are expected to top 1000 this summer.

Any organisation, public or private can join the scheme.

For the last four years the local authority has participated in the tax-free bikes programme, aimed at encouraging eco-friendly travel.

This means staff can borrow money for a bike and pay it back out of their monthly salary. They pay no tax or national insurance on the sum and it means bikes are effectively about 30 per cent cheaper. No costs are incurred by the council to provide the scheme.

Step out to celebrate the South Downs National Park

A special relay of walks is being held in Brighton & Hove on Saturday April 2 and Sunday April 3 to celebrate the South Downs National Park.

The walks are being organised by Brighton & Hove City Council and will follow the local boundary of the National Park, from Rottingdean in the east to Portslade in the west.

Walkers can join for part of the relay - each section of the walk is between 3.5 and five miles - or follow the whole 20 mile route. The walks will be lead by the council's Cityparks rangers and by local wildlife groups

Biggest book giveaway!

Books are being celebrated day and night in Brighton & Hove this week, with lots of events and thousands of free books being handed out.

World Book Day is this Thursday, March 3. Brighton & Hove City Council’s library service has lined up a series of activities encouraging people to share a love of books.

There will be a range of activities at Hove and Jubilee libraries including fancy dress, desert island books, book cover design competition, coffee morning, treasure hunt and lots more.

Artist is wanted to create mini-park near station

£8,000 of European cash is being offered as a fee for an artist to create a tiny oasis of peace in central Brighton. The council wants to transform a patch of empty land near Brighton station into a ‘pocket park’ to bring a thoroughfare back to life.

Officials are looking for an artist who can work some magic with this area of the North Laine, at the corner of Trafalgar Street and Station Street. The idea should use a combination of public art and landscaping to create a pleasant spot to spend a while.

Council uses Rock tactics to win conferences

The council’s tourism arm VisitBrighton is using the new Brighton Rock movie to promote the city as a conference venue.
Staff and industry partners have a stand at International Confex at London’s Earls Court between March 1-3, billed as “the event for event organisers”. They will use the gathering to persuade conference organisers to come to the city.

Council wants views on Park House future

A series of exhibitions will take place to seek public views on how the site of an Edwardian mansion on Hove’s Old Shoreham Road should be redeveloped.

Brighton & Hove City Council has set out its aspirations for Park House and now wants to test them with the public and other key organisations.
Owners of the site, Hyde Martlet housing association, have made two applications to redevelop the former Bellerby’s language school – in 2008 and 2009. Both were refused by the council on design grounds. Appeals on each were dismissed.

Repeat prescription for Brighton conferences

Three new conferences worth over £2m to the city’s economy have been booked into the Brighton Centre.

The events were won in successful joint bids by the venue and the council’s tourism arm VisitBrighton.

The health visitors’ body, the CPHVA, will be holding its annual conference on October 19-20 this year and returning again on the November 7-8 2012.

The Royal College of Midwives’ annual conference will be held on November 15-16 2011.

Around 1,150 delegates are expected at the three events, which will earn the city an estimated £2.1m

Eastbourne Has Massive Impact On Brighton Rock

Eastbourne Seafront and Downland at Beachy Head will have a massive impact on the new adaptation of Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock when it hits cinemas early next year.

The film crew based themselves in the seaside town for 3 weeks during filming, with 13 days of filming taking place in Eastbourne and along the cliffs at Belle Tout and Birling Gap.
