Darlington prepares for St.George’s Day

Darlington will be celebrating St. George’s Day on Saturday 23 April in a number of ways, including toasting St. George at the Market Cross at 12 noon, with the Mayor & Mayoress of Darlington; along with honoured guests from Mulheim.

Bryan Thistlewaite, the Mayor of Darlington said “It’s a real pleasure to recognise St George’s Day with a toast and hope to continue in this tradition for many years to come.”

Darlington Library’s junior mascot Deefor the Dragon will be joining the celebrations by handing out roses to members of the public which will be supplied by Flowers by Nattrass.

DARLINGTON CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR

CELEBRATION of Chinese New Year is set to take place in Darlington on Monday 7th February.

Students from Hummersknott School and Language College, who are studying for a GCSE in Mandarin, are busy preparing for the celebrations. They will be performing a dragon dance followed by a Thai Chi demonstration in Joseph Pease Place, in the Market Square in Darlington on Monday 7th February.

DARLINGTON IN BRITAIN IN BLOOM FINAL

DARLINGTON has reached the finals of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom campaign.

77 villages, towns, cities and urban communities from across the UK have been invited to take part in the competition. Each will be visited by a panel of national RHS Britain in Bloom judges in the final stage of the competition in August.

THE PRESIDENT of the Royal Town Planning Institute, RTPI, Ann Skippers, has today visited Darlington Council’s Planning team to talk about ‘Distinctly Darlington’ – the Council’s award-winning guide to design, ‘The Design of New Development within the Borough’.

Bank Top Christmas Fair

RESIDENTS and members of the local community are invited to the Bank Top Christmas Fair this Saturday, 27th November 2010.

The Christmas Fair takes place this Saturday, 27th November 2010 from 1pm – 4pm at Eastbourne Methodist Church, Yarm Road, Darlington.

Children can look forward to a magician and having their faces painted and adults can take advantage of an array of stalls including; gifts, cakes and tombola.

Teas and refreshments will be served.

Free off street parking in Darlington

DARLINGTON council is joining in with the giving at Christmas time by waiving the fees on all off street parking during the lead up to Christmas.

To coincide with the popular Christingle Markets, all off street parking in the town will be free from 3.30pm onwards on the following dates; Thursdays, 25th November, 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd December.

Christingle Markets will bring a variety of Christmas gifts and food specialities to High Row in Darlington town centre.

MAYOR’S BALL SUCCESS

THE Mayor’s Charity Ball has been hailed a success after it raised more than £3,500 for good causes.
The event, held in the Dolphin Centre, was organised around the theme ‘Under the sea’ to reflect the Mayor Councillor Bryan Thistlethwaite’s hobby of diving.

In total £4,075.41 was raised and will be shared between the Mayor’s chosen charities - Diabetes UK, CLIC and the RNLI.

Dog team scoops gold award

The team, who achieved a silver award last year, has been awarded a Gold Stray Dog Footprint as part of the RSPCA’s Community Animal Welfare Footprints (CAWF) 2010.

Launched in April 2008, the RSPCA's CAWF scheme aims to reward and promote good practise in animal welfare by local authorities and housing providers in England and Wales. It recognises organisations that have gone above and beyond their basic service requirements to ensure higher animal welfare standards.

WARMING UP FOR DARLINGTON’S DANCE FESTIVAL

DARLINGTON is getting ready for it’s first ever dance festival, Saturday 25th & Sunday 26 September.
The Darlington Dance Festival, supported by TFM, will bring together Darlington’s dance schools and A Level dance students from Queen Elizabeth’s Sixth Form College in a two-day dance extravaganza, hosted by tfm’s breakfast show presenter Matt Bailey.
