BEACH LAWNS WORK
Work to improve access to the Beach Lawns in Weston-super-Mare and prevent damage to the surface gets under way next week.
"Over the years vehicles driving on and off this area and erosion have led to uneven ground and rutting in wet weather and what we're putting in place is the most appropriate, cost-effective way of improving the lawns without placing any extra financial burdens on the council as section 106 money is being used to fund this work. It will prevent the lawns becoming unsightly and reduce long-term maintenance costs," said North Somerset Council's deputy leader, Cllr Elfan Ap Rees.
The works, costing £49,000 will focus on the reinforcement of seven entrance ways to prevent further damage and involves putting down a plastic matting which the grass will grow through. Re-seeding the worst areas where the grass has been lost to sand erosion will also be carried out. The work will be complete before the first booked event in April. The lawns will be accessible during this time although some areas will be fenced off while the works take place.
Blakedown Landscapes are carrying out the work on behalf of North Somerset Council and will start work on Monday January 24. They are scheduled to last four weeks, depending on weather conditions. Information signs will be placed around the site which will describe what is being done.
